![]() If you live in a small town or shop them chances are you've heard about Shopping Small Business Saturdays. Many years ago, living in Frederick, MD, I ran across a few stores that were advertising this new event. I recall speaking with many of the shop owners and you could feel the excitement about this becoming an epic event. First observed in November 2010, American Express launched Shop Small Business Saturday, a campaign to help recognize small brick and mortar shops in local communities. A counterpart to Black Friday and Cyber Monday, which traditionally benefited larger retail chains. This year, I am happy to join this great event as a small shop owner and to promote this event in our small historic town of Harpers Ferry, West Virginia. Here is a neat info-graphic that illustrates just how important this event is for small shops and communities around your area. So do something great for your community and shop small on Small Business - Saturday, November 29th! What better timing than helping your local shops during this holiday shopping season. ![]() I sit here thinking about something witty and funny to write in my next blog....and I struggle to be cheery today about the holiday season coming near. News of tragedy hit close to home last night. A very dear friend and her family had a tragic episode Wednesday evening. Our circle of friends are all pretty stunned and I know I couldn't sleep much last night after the news. I laid in bed thinking about her and her 4 children, replaying the news cast over and over in such disbelief. I kept thinking about how life is so precious and in an instant, life can change without even an apology. As the hustle and bustle of holiday shopping comes near, We all need to stop and make sure that we tell those close to us how much we love them and spend as much time with them as possible. We just never know when tragedy will strike. I use to hear an old saying from a friend about needing a village to make families thrive and grow... and I suspect my dear friend and her family will need the same in this situation. Prayers go out to her and her 4 beautiful children. Angels are among us... and her children are blessed to have such a wonderful, brave mother who is alive and picking up the pieces today. May she be watched over by angles as they climb through the next days and weeks rebuilding from this tragedy. |
